See Why I Love Being A ZOE Lab Rat

October 22, 20232 min read

Some super exciting news from ZOE today!

Gut microbiome retesting has arrived

I joined Zoe back in July and have been following their program - as best I can given my lectin intolerance.

At the outset, the initial Zoe testing includes blood fat, blood glucose and the area of most interest, a stool test to assess gut microbiome health.

As science evolves, the program evolves too, it's like being a lab rat - part of a collective that's shining a light on the links between gut health, nutrition with health outcomes. Imagine being able to more accurately predict future health from the diversity (or lack thereof) of our gut microbiome.

As an IBS warrior, working to improve, repair, heal (and dare I hope, cure) my condition, any discoveries around the gut, gives much longed for optimism. Naturally this goes for those suffering from the whole spectrum of gut illness, from crohns and celiac disease, to bowel cancer.

It could be the case that blood glucose and blood fat scores may improve as gut health improves, but these types of outcomes are yet to be discovered.

Another area that's got me excited is around Butyrate - a short chain fatty acid that’s produced when good bacteria breaks down fibre in the colon. It provides energy for intestinal cells and is thought to reduce inflammation, as well as supporting our immune system.

I already take a supplement as part of a protocol I’ve devised, from my own research to improve my gut. Naturally, I make no claims regarding outcomes here, because my journey is ongoing (and also because our biology is so unique). What’s really interesting is that Zoe may soon be able to gauge butyrate levels from stool samples. This could unlock deficiencies and more information about the role Butyrate plays.

Hmmmm Cookies…Gut transit time matters too, it’s very closely correlated with gut health. New cookies will form a further test to establish an accurate time from eating to excretion. In the meantime we can do this ourselves at home by dying a muffin with royal blue food colouring. See how here: https://zoe.com/bluepoop/bake-blue-muffins
