Did You Know Not All Fat is 'Bad'

We have 6 types of fat in our body

Essential fat - necessary for temperature regulation, fat-soluble vitamin and fibre absorption, plus fertility hormone production.

Brown fat - needed for energy & to maintain body temperature

White fat - when in a healthy range it’s the body’s largest energy store. It’s essential for insulin management, but if we carry too much, it can cause insulin resistance causing weight gain and risk of developing Type II diabetes.

Beige fat - its role is to transform white fat to useful thermal energy, which makes it a good target fat for weight loss. 75mins of high intensity exercise a week should do it to prompt release of the hormone irisin that creates the beige effect.

Subcutaneous fat (body fat) - located just beneath the skin, this fat makes up 90% of our fat percentage. It’s the sort that lingers around the tummy, thighs and hips in women, and tummy in men. (It produces oestrogen which is why women typically have more). It’s our body’s emergency energy back-up, but too much increases the chances of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Visceral fat - this is the most toxic fat that sits around the vital organs, in our abdomen. (You can be slim and still be carrying too much visceral fat). It accumulates and secretes retinol-binding protein 4, a known culprit in insulin resistance. Higher levels of visceral fat are also linked to an increased risk of colorectal and breast cancers, dementia, stroke and Alzheimer’s.

We want to closely monitor clients Subcutaneous & Visceral fat levels to make sure these are reducing, NOT muscle mass or bone density.

Don’t be stuck in a toxic fat relationship!
