Why Does Weight Loss Plateau & What Should I Do When it Happens

October 22, 20232 min read

Why Am I Stuck?

I just wanted to jump on and share some info about weight-loss plateaus - a perfectly normal part of every weight loss journey (and something I’ve recently been through)

A plateau is a period of ‘stalling’ or even weight gain, when our bodies reach a ‘set-point’ - a natural pause if you like.

It allows essential time for our body to adapt to your new ‘normal’.

No healthy, sustainable weight loss journey is linear, and plateaus are essential for long-term weight loss.

Everyone has a unique set-point.

Lasting 8-12wks, plateaus can be really demoralising and create negative thought patterns, so…

1. DON’T let the noise in your head scupper your well earned progress

2. It’s crucial to maintain your healthy habits during this phase

A plateau doesn’t mean our healthy lifestyle changes aren’t working.

How Can I Break Out of a Plateau?

Check-in on yourself:

Are you hydrated?

Are you still in a calorie deficit?

Could your focus have relaxed a little?

Are some old habits sneaking up on you? Little snacks, treats or portion size increased etc.

Change 1 Thing

Our bodies are amazing at adapting, be that to a poor diet or a healthy one.

It gets settled, so disrupt it with 1 change:

An extra walk

An extra gym session

Have your carb at lunch instead of dinner (this worked for me 👌🏻)

Allow a greater rest period between dinner & breakfast (12hrs for example)

Try not to eat late (after 7pm ideally)

Remember You Are So Much More Than A Single Number

The number on the scales doesn’t show the whole story; stage of digestion, muscle mass, hydration levels all impact weight.

Remember How Far You’ve Come

Remember your body is amazing

Stay in the game (quitting will only take your journey backwards and I don’t want that for you)
